New Delhi. More than 480 million subscribers of mobile telephony services will have 11-digit number from January 1.

The subscribers will have to prefix 9 to the existing 10-digit number. For example, a number 9xxxxxxxxx will become 99xxxxxxxxx.

MHA wants stricter verification for SIMs

In the backdrop of mobile phones having Indian SIM cards and UAE’s Thuraya satellite phone used by Pakistani terrorists during Mumbai attack last week, the home ministry on Wednesday asked the department of telecommunication (DoT) to quickly devise a mechanism of a “strict consumer verification” exercise and formulate a comprehensive policy on “monitoring and intercepting” sat phones.

Coming soon, mobiles that don’t need to be recharged

Hate charging your cellphone every now and then? Well, a self-powering handset that never needs to be charged is on the anvil — thanks to the efforts of a researcher who has developed a new technology that could make self-powered devices a reality.

The self-powering cellhone won’t require its battery to be charged because it would convert sound waves produced by the user into the energy it needs to keep running.
